A brand profile on this site is a fact sheet with a byline: owner, history, range structure and markets, sourced from public records, with no verdict, no pick and no ranking. ZYN is the first profile in the proposed set. This profile assembles ZYN's owner, history and product documentation from the sources listed below. Figures this page does not have a solid public source for, it does not print.
ZYN's head to head with VELO is at ZYN vs VELO. The ownership landscape around it is mapped in the staged explainer who owns the nicotine pouch brands.
Who owns ZYN?
Swedish Match, and through it, Philip Morris International. The brand was created by Swedish Match, the Swedish company whose snus history runs through the history of snus and the heritage brands in Ettan, General and the original Swedish snus brands. In November 2022 Swedish Match was acquired by PMI, and ZYN has since been reported as one of the strategic brands PMI acquired. PMI had already held a pouch brand, Shiro, acquired in May 2021 with the Danish company AG Snus, so ZYN entered an existing, smaller pouch portfolio and became its centre of gravity. The acquisition price and the brand's sales and share figures are deliberately absent from this profile: the first is a transaction detail outside the profile format, and the second group are figures this page's sources assert without the kind of documentation the profile format requires, so they are left out rather than repeated.
What is ZYN made of, and how is it used?
ZYN pouches do not contain tobacco or stem material. Reference documentation describes the pouches as containing nicotine extracted from tobacco leaves together with food grade ingredients, inside pouches made of plant fibres that allow the nicotine to diffuse out when moistened. The use pattern is the standard one for the category, set out in how to use a nicotine pouch: the pouch is placed between the upper lip and gum and used for up to an hour. ZYN's range is sold in flavoured and unflavoured varieties, the unflavoured category being the subject of unflavoured nicotine pouches explained, and its flavour names are a worked example in why brands name the same flavour differently. Strength labelling on ZYN cans follows the milligram system explained in the strength guide.
How did ZYN reach the US market?
In stages that the reference record dates unusually precisely. After the 2014 introduction, ZYN pouches were initially launched on a small scale in the US, first being marketed in Colorado and then in various western US states during 2016, and ZYN also began to be marketed in Sweden in 2016. Manufacturing followed: from 2017 to 2019 one of Swedish Match's US plants, at Owensboro, Kentucky, was expanded to handle manufacturing of ZYN pouches directly in the US, with the expanded plant opening in May 2019. ZYN has also been distributed in other countries including the UK, Switzerland, South Africa and Pakistan, per the same record.
What does the FDA authorization cover?
Marketing authorization for a defined product set, which is a legal status, not an endorsement. PMI's release documents the FDA authorizing all ZYN nicotine pouch products then currently marketed by Swedish Match in the US: 20 products, at the brand's US strengths. What a marketing granted order is, how it differs from approval, and what the separate modified risk process involves are explained from the orders themselves in FDA authorization of nicotine pouches, explained, and this profile does not summarise that explainer's legal analysis beyond this paragraph. Authorization status changes over time and by product, and the profile will be updated from the orders as they are published.
FAQ
Is ZYN a Swedish or American brand?
Both, by stages. It was created by the Swedish company Swedish Match and introduced in 2014, marketed in Sweden from 2016, and built its US market from a Colorado launch in the same period, with US manufacturing added at Owensboro, Kentucky from 2019.
Who owns ZYN now?
Philip Morris International, through Swedish Match, which PMI acquired in November 2022. Swedish Match remains the brand's owner and manufacturer of record.
What strengths does ZYN come in?
The January 2025 FDA authorization covered specified ZYN products at 3 mg and 6 mg per pouch. Later retailer listings describe additional strengths, including the Ultra line at 9 mg and 11 mg. Other markets' ranges differ, and the can in a given market is the authority for that market.
How many pouches are in a ZYN can?
15 or 20, depending on the market, per the brand's reference documentation. Can counts across brands are one of the label elements covered in how to read a nicotine pouch label.
Is ZYN snus?
No. ZYN contains no tobacco and is a nicotine pouch, not snus. The distinction is drawn in snus vs nicotine pouches, and ZYN's maker being a snus company is a matter of corporate history, not product category.
